Earn your Certificate in Medical Information Management. This program provides skills needed to securely and professionally manage health care records. You’ll learn organization, record storage, effective communication methods, and ethical and legal rules concerning the confidentiality of health information as covered in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Here's how it works
Your certificate program consists of courses designed to take you step-by-step toward understanding all the essential elements of Medical Information Management. Your first course will be sent to you as soon as your enrollment has been accepted. This outline covers all the courses required for your study-at-home certificate program.
You will need access to a Microsoft® Windows®-based computer (running Windows Vista or later) and the Internet in order to complete your program with the Continuing Education Center.
You complete the following courses in the order indicated:
HIT109 - Confidentiality of Health Information
Ethical and legal rules concerning the confidentiality of health information is presented with particular emphasis on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Background material will include operation of the legal system and principles of legal liability.

HIT113 - Medical Information Management and Office Practice
Students learn to manage the flow of information in health care settings. Course coverage includes the development of organization, record storage, information management, and office administration skills. Students will learn the order of information for medical records, the appropriate steps for correcting records and how to locate records that have been incorrectly filed. The course also covers effective communication methods and the administrative process of a medical office.

Online Library and Librarian
Students in the Continuing Education Center have access to an online library for use during their studies. Students can use this library to do the required research in the courses they complete or can use it for general reference and links to valuable resources. The library contains helpful research assistance, articles, databases, books, and Web links. A librarian is available to answer questions on general research-related topics via email and to assist students in research activities during their studies with the Continuing Education Center.
