Program Overview

This course uses Abode® InDesign® (software included with the program) to teach graphic design. Your studies include the basic elements and mediums of design from concept to finished product. You will develop the skills needed to successfully create a designed piece through this visual application.

Program Objective
Upon completion of the program, students will have acquired the skills to utilize the integration of text and graphics using Adobe InDesign in the creation of a graphic presentation.

Your course material will be sent immediately after your enrollment has been accepted. You will need access to a computer to complete this program.

Computer specifications: You will need access to a Microsoft® Windows®-based computer to complete this program. The Continuing Education Center recommends the following as minimum specifications: Pentium® IV, Centrino®, Xeon®, CoreTM Duo or better, Windows® XP (sp2), or Vista® as the operating system, for XP - 256 MB RAM (512 Recommended), for Vista® 512 MB RAM minimum (1 GB recommended), 1.8GB available hard drive space, and DVD ROM drive.

You will complete the following courses in the order indicated to earn your Adobe® InDesign® Certificate:

GRD110 - Introduction to Graphic Design

Introduction to Graphic Design covers the basic principles, elements, and mediums of design through the concept, skills, and tools involved in developing a design piece through the applications of these concepts to visual and communication processes. This course also covers industry terminology, file types, balance, contrast, direction, economy, emphasis, proportion, rhythm, and unity as it relates to graphic design creations.

GRD201 - Typography

Typography is an exploration of different components of type, typefaces, and their identification, which are legibility, visual organization, proportion, and weight. When and where, procedures, and methods for use in print and Web-based graphic creations.

GRD205 - Electronic Publishing (InDesign®)

The Electronic Publishing course focuses on the integration of text and graphics using Adobe® InDesign®. Course includes use of scanning devices.

Online Library and Librarian
Students in the Continuing Education Center have access to an online library for use during their studies. Students can use this library to do the required research in the courses they complete or can use it for general reference and links to valuable resources. The library contains helpful research assistance, articles, databases, books, and Web links. A librarian is available to answer questions on general research-related topics via email and to assist students in research activities during their studies with the Continuing Education Center.
